Overview
of Film Production
Gorgas Science Foundation, Inc. was founded in the name of education and to this end produces a variety of educational materials.

One venture boldly pursued
by GSF is the production of full-length natural
history films. The first film focused in on
the unique and spectacular flora and fauna of
a hidden river tucked away amongst the eastern
Sierra Madre Oriental in Mexico. Upon the success
of the first film, shot on 16mm film by world-class
cinematographer John Bax, a series was drafted
and 3 films followed in close succession. These
films took us from the Rio Grande Delta of the
United States and into the mountainous cloud
forest of Mexico.

| In 2002 GSF extended its range by releasing its first film shot
on another continent and hemisphere—Sahyadris:
Mountains of the Monsoon, a full-length film focusing
on the wildlife, habitats, and ecology of the Western
Ghats mountain range in South India, one of the
most biodiverse regions on the planet. The film
also touches on the relationship between spirituality
and the strong conservation ethos of India, a land
of over a billion people. |

These 5 films have received numerous accolades and awards for their stories, cinematography, and educational value. Most recently, Sahyadris was a finalist for the Newcomer Award by BBC-sponsored Wildscreen Film Festival, an award known among wildlife filmmakers as the ‘Green Oscar’.
And more films are on their way! New projects are in the works, and the future of film production is bright for the Foundation. In addition to these five feature films, Gorgas Science Foundation has taken on many other smaller scale productions related to conservation and education. It is our belief that film is a medium to the minds of the world’s youth and is a valuable tool in education.
